Chapter Nineteen â 18 years and 4 months before the collapse
âThis heat is intolerable,â said Jim, opening another bottle of fruit wine in the garden of the un-built country house.
âIt hasnât rained for weeks,â said Asher, accepting a top up. âWe complain when it rains because of the floods, then complain when it stops raining.â
âHereâs to doing business with each other,â Jim raised a toast.
âHereâs to helping each other out,â Asher changed the toast.
The two men drank. Annabel was still pottering around in the garden with Olivia, making the most of the evening light.
âI hope this solves some of your problems,â said Asher.
âIt does,â Jim confirmed with enthusiasm. âIâve already settled the previous mortgage and, as soon as Garcia builds something we can live in, we wonât have to pay rent on the other place. The commute will be longer, but thatâs a price Iâm willing to pay. This is our retirement.â
âHow long will it take?â
âWe expect to have planning permission in two weeks and, if thatâs the case, we could move in by October.â
âItâs all come together.â
âYes, and the irony is that it was all because of one of Robertsâ recent laws.â
The two men laughed. Asher sobered.
âAlthough we shouldnât laugh,â he said. âHave you seen the news?â
âThe murders, yes, but donât you think itâs the chickens coming home to roost? The fact they are killing each other is a sign of the beginning of the end, donât you think?â
âI donât know,â said Asher. âEverything has been very calm following the killings.â
âYes, but when you combine it with this drought and the rumours that the harvest will fail. Itâll create a perfect storm.â
âYou think?â
âDo you think the EU or the US will slacken the tariffs just because the harvest has failed? Theyâll have us by the short and curlies.â
âAnd that will play into the hands of Roberts even more. Heâll blame the foreigners for our predicament.â
âExactly.â
âBut is the drought not affecting Europe?â
âIn part, but not as badly. Itâs a jet stream thing.â
âItâs climate change. Robertsâs speech is on the stretch. Watch it.â
âWhat did he say?â
âMaking excuses for the killings. Almost apologising. Said it was an inevitable albeit tragic consequence of the tough transition our political system is making to rid itself of corruption and greed.â
âSmart. I guess no-one has sympathy with the enemies he bumped off.â
âYou think it was him?â
âItâs very easy to blame zealots.â
âHe confirmed that they have arrested 77 for being part of a conspiracy which reached deep into Unity.â
Jim sighed, swiping through posts on his stretch.
âWhat is it?â Asher asked.
âMy sister is posting pro Roberts memes on social media. I think she only does it to annoy me.â
Jim let out a yelp of joy.
âJesus! You scared me,â said Asher.
âItâs an email from my lawyer about the Zhang case. They have thrown out the expert testimony, and they have ordered Zhang to pay most of the costs, so rather than having to stump up for court costs, I think Iâll end up gaining from this whole shambles.â
âCan he
